Toll Provisions for Vehicles Over 3.5 Tons

In Switzerland, the regulation of heavy vehicles, specifically those exceeding 3.5 tonnes in gross vehicle weight, is managed through a well-structured toll system designed to account for both the environmental impact and the infrastructural wear caused by these vehicles. The Swiss toll system is primarily divided into two distinct types of charges: the Heavy Duty Vehicle Levy (LSVA) and the Flat Rate Charge for Heavy Vehicles (PSVA).

These charges are applicable to different categories of vehicles and are calculated based on specific criteria such as the vehicle’s weight, emission class, and usage. Understanding these toll provisions is crucial for transport companies, vehicle owners, and operators to ensure compliance and optimize cost management when operating within Swiss borders.

Heavy Duty Vehicle Levy

(LSVA)

The LSVA, which stands for “Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe” (heavy vehicle levy according to performance), applies to vehicles with a permissible gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes or to vehicles intended for the transport of goods. The amount of this fee depends on the total weight of the vehicle, emission class and kilometers driven.

Flat Rate Charge for Heavy Vehicles

(PSVA)

The PSVA, or “Pauschale Schwerverkehrsabgabe” (heavy vehicle flat fee), applies to vehicles such as heavy passenger cars, motorhomes and caravans, buses and tractors. A flat fee is paid for these vehicles, which, unlike LSVA, does not depend on performance.
